Replacing an aging grommet
Original-style valve cover grommets are made to seal under heat and oil exposure, and over many years that material can harden, shrink or split. Once it no longer grips the cover, oil often tracks down the outside of the valve cover and onto the head. Replacing the grommet is a straightforward job when the cover is off for other work.
Before fitting the new part, wipe the cover and head surfaces clean and remove any gasket remnants. Seat the grommet evenly, then tighten the cover fasteners in a crisscross pattern. Run the engine, let it cool, and recheck the fasteners to confirm the seal has settled.
