Replacing a worn grommet
A valve cover grommet is a rubber or elastomer seal between the valve cover and the cylinder head. Its job is to keep oil inside the top of the engine while the cover is bolted down. Over time heat, oil exposure and repeated removals can flatten or harden the seal, and a worn grommet can let oil seep along the cover edge.
When replacing one, clean the sealing surface on the cover and head so no old material or debris remains. Seat the new grommet fully in its groove before setting the cover in place, and tighten the cover fasteners evenly so the seal compresses without distortion.
