Description

Overview

The G2 Axle and Gear 30-8022 is a front wheel bearing kit for the Dana 28 IFS front axle on the 1984–1990 Ford Bronco II and 1983–1997 Ford Ranger, with all parts for one side.

The kit has a Timken inner bearing and race, a Timken outer bearing and race and a wheel bearing seal. IFS stands for independent front suspension, the style of front axle this kit is made for.

The kit is for the Dana 28 IFS front axle, and the Ranger years run through 1997.

The Dana 28 IFS is a small independent front axle used under compact Ford trucks and SUVs. G2 Axle and Gear’s kit gives the bearings, races and seal in one box. The title’s years do not exactly match the list, which includes the Ranger up to 1997, so the list is the better guide. G2 does not publish dimensions or Timken numbers for the 30-8022.

Key features

  • All parts for one side
  • Timken inner wheel bearing and race
  • Timken outer wheel bearing and race
  • Wheel bearing seal
  • For the Dana 28 IFS front axle
  • Front position

Sizing up an IFS front hub

The Dana 28 IFS is a compact independent front axle, so its hubs and bearings are smaller than those on a solid axle. Because the hub sits in a steering knuckle, play in the knuckle can look like bearing wear. Check ball joints and tie rod ends for movement before condemning the bearings.

Water is the most common cause of early bearing failure on these small front hubs. A worn seal lets water and grit into the grease, and the rollers pit quickly under those conditions. When the hub is apart, inspect the bearing surfaces and the seal lip, and pack the bearings with fresh grease.

  • Check ball joints before replacing bearings
  • Inspect the seal lip for cracks
  • Repack the hub with fresh grease

Questions & Answers

What comes in the G2 30-8022 kit?

A Timken inner wheel bearing and race, a Timken outer wheel bearing and race and a wheel bearing seal, supplied for one side.

Which Fords use the 30-8022?

The kit fits the 1984–1990 Ford Bronco II and the 1983–1997 Ford Ranger, in the trims named for each model.

Which axle is the 30-8022 made for?

The Dana 28 IFS, an independent front suspension axle used in the front position. Confirm fit for your truck's year and trim before ordering.

Should I replace the ball joints when I replace the wheel bearings?

Often worth checking at the same time. The hub is apart for the bearing job, so ball joints and tie rod ends can be inspected for play before the wheel goes back on.

What causes premature bearing wear on an IFS truck?

Water entry through a failed seal, under-greasing and loose hub adjustment are common causes. Larger tire sizes that add load can also speed up wear, so check the bearings more often after a tire change.
