Before you install

A wheel cylinder converts brake fluid pressure into shoe movement at the wheel. On an older CJ, the front cylinder works alongside the drum brake shoes and the adjuster, so its condition affects how evenly the brakes engage on both sides of the vehicle. Because the cylinder is a hydraulic part, a small leak can lower fluid level and let air into the line, which makes the pedal feel soft.

Before fitting, inspect the brake drum, shoes and backing plate for fluid soaking. Check that the piston moves freely and that the boot is intact. Fluid on the linings means the shoes usually need replacing as well. Bleed the system after the new cylinder is connected, and road test the vehicle at low speed before relying on the brakes.

  • Compare the new cylinder with the old one before removing the line
  • Keep brake fluid off painted surfaces
  • Replace the rubber hose if it is cracked or swollen

Questions & Answers

Does the Crown CROJ0803640 wheel cylinder fit a CJ7?

The list does not include CJ7 models, so it is not shown as fitting one. The listed models are the CJ3, CJ5, CJ5A, CJ6 and CJ6A, all in Base trim, with years from 1960 to 1971 or 1966 to 1968.

Which side of the vehicle is this cylinder for?

It is the passenger side front cylinder, marked Front Right. It does not fit the driver side or rear positions.

Is the part number CROJ0803640 the same as the title number?

The title shows J0803640 and the part number is CROJ0803640 with the CRO prefix. Use CROJ0803640 when searching, and check it against the markings on your old cylinder.

Should both front wheel cylinders be replaced together?

Many people replace both front cylinders together so braking stays even. Inspect the opposite side for leaks, scoring or a sticking piston before deciding. Replacing only one side is common when the other cylinder is sound and moves freely.
