Overview
The Crown Automotive valve cover mounting screw, part CROG271444, is a 5/16 in. -18 x 5/8 in. screw for mounting a valve cover. Three are required per valve cover, and it is universal fit.
Valve cover fastener care
Valve cover screws hold a gasket under steady heat and oil exposure, so their job is to keep even pressure on the cover without crushing the seal. Threads that are stripped, rusted or cross-threaded make an even clamp hard to achieve. Clean the threaded holes with a tap before fitting new screws, and wipe away any oil that would hide a stripped thread.
Tighten the screws in a crisscross pattern rather than one at a time, so the cover seats evenly. Use the torque value from your engine’s service manual, not a guess. Once the engine has run and cooled, re-check snugness, since gasket compression can settle after the first heat cycles.
Look for oil seepage around the screw heads at each oil change, since loose screws are a common source of leaks at the cover.
- Replace any screw with a damaged head or rounded threads.
- Keep spare screws of the same thread size on hand for the set.
