Signs of a leaking worm seal
The worm shaft seal sits where the steering worm shaft enters the gear housing, so any leak there usually shows as a film of lubricant on the lower part of the steering gear. Wipe the housing clean, drive a short distance, and check again to see where the oil is coming from. Because the gear relies on that lubricant, a slow leak can lead to tight steering and extra wear inside the box.
Replacing the seal means opening the steering gear, so inspect the worm shaft and the housing bore while it is accessible. Look for grooves or scoring where the seal lip rides, since a damaged surface will cut a new seal. Clean all old sealant and debris from the housing, and refill with the correct lubricant before testing the steering.
