Overview

The yoke is the link between the transfer case output and the rear driveshaft’s U-joint. It fits the 1996–2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ, the 1999–2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ, the 1996–1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ and the 1997–2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ.

Checking the slip yoke
A slip yoke lets the driveshaft change length as the axles move up and down, so it is a wear point that deserves a check during regular service. Inspect the splines at the transfer case output for rust, pitting or uneven wear, and feel for play when the shaft is moved side to side. Damaged splines can cause vibration and make the driveshaft slide stiffly, which often shows up as a shudder during acceleration.
When the yoke is replaced, the U-joint is usually replaced with it. Check the seal at the transfer case for leaks, since leaking oil can contaminate the splines and speed up wear. Mark the driveshaft and yoke alignment before removing the old yoke so the new one goes back in the same orientation, and keep the spline surfaces clean and lightly lubricated as the yoke slides.
