Overview
The Crown Automotive 83503077 is an axle bearing retaining ring with a 2-1/4 inch outside diameter for the rear inner position. It fits a wide range of Jeep models, from the SJ Cherokee and Wagoneer to the Wrangler YJ, TJ and JK. It is a direct fit.
An axle bearing retaining ring, also called a snap ring, is a small spring clip that keeps an axle shaft bearing from moving along the shaft. It is a modest part, but it is the item that holds the bearing in place, so a worn or distorted ring is worth replacing during an axle shaft or bearing job.
Crown describes itself as a maker and distributor of replacement parts for Jeep vehicles, with over 8,000 part numbers including many factory-discontinued items. The only measurement Crown gives for the ring is its outside diameter, so compare that figure with the ring you are replacing.

Snap ring installation checks
An axle bearing retaining ring holds the bearing against a shoulder, so it carries the load that tries to push the bearing out of its seat. Rings that have been pried open too far lose their spring force and can slide out of the groove. A ring that looks bent, flattened or discolored from heat is best replaced rather than reused, even if it still fits.
When fitting a new ring, seat it fully in the groove and make sure it sits evenly all the way around. A ring that sits partly out of its groove can cause the bearing to walk and make noise. Check the bearing and the surrounding parts for wear at the same time, since a loose bearing or a damaged housing bore can cause the same symptoms as a bad ring.
- Replace a ring that looks bent or heat-discolored
- Use snap ring pliers that fit the ring’s opening
- Confirm the ring is fully seated before reassembly

Installation notes
The ring seats on the rear axle shaft inside the axle housing, so the shaft has to be removed to reach it. Retaining rings should seat fully in their groove; reuse of a stretched ring is not recommended.
