How helper springs work

A helper spring adds support on top of the main coil spring when the rear end is loaded. Under light loads the main spring does most of the work, and the helper engages as weight increases, which can reduce the sag and bottoming that come with towing or hauling. Because it works within the coil suspension, the rest of the rear end still sets the overall ride.

Helper springs are only as effective as the parts around them. Worn shocks, tired bushings and sagging main springs limit how well any add-on works. Inspect the shocks for leaks and the mounting points for cracks before installation, and replace worn items when they are found.

Adjusting the helper to suit the load is part of getting a good result. Set it for the weight you carry most often, and recheck after changing loads or tires. Ride height should stay even from side to side after the adjustment.

  • Inspect shocks for leaks before installing
  • Check mounting points for cracks
  • Recheck ride height after changing loads
