Description

Overview

The Rubicon Express REA1012 is a 3/16-inch steel transmission skid plate for the 2007–2011 Jeep Wrangler JK with an automatic transmission. The design helps reduce obstacle hang-ups and lets the vehicle slide over terrain more smoothly.

The plate is CNC laser cut and formed, and it mounts high and tight to protect the drivetrain while preserving ground clearance. Rubicon Express also offers oil pan, transfer case and fuel tank skids, which are separate parts.

Both 2-door and 4-door models are covered, so body style does not change the fit. Automatic transmissions are the only ones this plate is made for, so manual-transmission owners should look elsewhere.

Key features

  • Automatic transmission only
  • 3/16-inch steel construction
  • CNC laser cut and formed
  • High, tight mounting that keeps clearance
  • Uses existing hardware and fasteners
  • No cutting or modification required
  • Black powder coat finish
  • Designed to work with all Rubicon Express suspension systems

Automatic transmission checks

A transmission skid takes impacts that would otherwise reach the transmission pan and fluid lines, so it works best when it stays high and tight to the frame. Rocks and stumps can still strike the plate on steep terrain, and a bent plate can rub the pan or the crossmember. Look over the plate after each hard outing.

Automatic transmissions run hot under heavy load, and the skid should not restrict airflow to the pan. Keep the underside clear of mud and packed debris so heat can leave the transmission. Confirm that the plate sits without contact at full suspension travel before a long trip.

  • Check the mounting bolts for looseness
  • Look for dents touching the transmission pan
  • Keep the underside clear of packed mud
  • Watch for rubbing at full suspension travel

Questions & Answers

Will the REA1012 fit a 2007–2011 Jeep Wrangler JK?

Yes. Rubicon Express names the 2007-2011 Jeep Wrangler JK, and the plate is designed for automatic transmissions. Confirm your transmission type before installing it.

Does it fit a manual transmission?

No. This plate is for automatic transmissions only, so a Wrangler with a manual transmission is not covered. Check your transmission type before installing it.

Does it need cutting or drilling?

No. Installation requires no cutting or drilling, since the plate mounts with the vehicle's existing hardware and fasteners. Reuse the bolts already on the vehicle.

Will it work with other suspension systems?

The plate is designed to work with all Rubicon Express suspension systems. For a non-Rubicon suspension, confirm compatibility before installing the plate.

How can I tell whether a Wrangler has an automatic transmission?

Look at the shift lever and the transmission code on the build sticker. An automatic has a gear selector with park, reverse, neutral and drive positions. Confirm this before ordering a skid plate.

Should the transmission skid be inspected after rocky trails?

Yes. Check for bent brackets, cracked welds, and dents that rub the transmission pan or crossmember. Also check the mounting bolts for looseness after hard impacts.
