Description

Overview

The Rubicon Express RE5520 is a 4.5-inch Extreme-Duty leaf spring lift kit for the 1987–1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ. It is aimed at owners who want a large gain in ground and tire clearance and more suspension flexibility. The kit is rated for a 3 to 4.99-inch lift range and includes no shocks.

The Extreme-Duty leaf springs are built to be durable and flexible, with good ride quality. The kit includes greaseable shackles and main eye bushings, stainless steel brake lines, sway bar disconnects and a drop Pitman arm. The system keeps the classic YJ ride while allowing 33-inch tires, and adding a 1-inch body lift allows 35-inch tires.

Greaseable shackles and main eye bushings let the spring pack be serviced with grease. The kit also includes stainless steel brake lines, a drop Pitman arm and sway bar disconnects.

Key features

  • Extreme-Duty leaf springs
  • Greaseable shackles and main eye bushings
  • Stainless steel brake lines
  • Sway bar disconnects and drop Pitman arm
  • Rated for 33-inch tires, or 35-inch tires with a 1-inch body lift

Greasing and servicing the springs

Greaseable shackles and main eye bushings allow the spring pack to be serviced rather than replaced when they wear. Grease the fittings at regular intervals, especially after trail use, water crossings or mud. Wipe each fitting clean before pressing the grease gun so dirt does not get pushed into the bushing.

Inspect the spring pack for cracked or broken leaves, loose center bolts and worn eye bushings. Look for play at the shackle, which can make steering feel loose. Stainless steel brake lines should be checked for rubbing against the new spring position and for kinks after the lift.

Keep track of the tire size you run. Heavier tires and taller sidewalls increase the load on every spring and bushing, so service intervals should be shorter with bigger tires.

Questions & Answers

Will the RE5520 fit a 1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ?

Yes. It is a direct fit for the 1987–1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ, so a 1994 YJ falls within those years. Confirm fit for your vehicle's trim before ordering.

What tire size does the RE5520 allow?

It allows 33-inch tires. Adding a 1-inch body lift allows 35-inch tires, and the system keeps the classic YJ ride. Plan for the driveshaft work before fitting larger tires.

Does the RE5520 need a new driveshaft?

Yes. Rubicon Express says installing a SYE and CV driveshaft is necessary with this kit. The kit itself includes no shocks, so plan those separately.

How often should leaf spring shackles be greased?

Grease them at each oil change or every few trail trips, depending on use. Look for dried grease, dirt packed into the shackle, and play at the bushing. Greaseable parts last longer when serviced regularly and the fittings stay clean.
