Measuring worn U-bolts
Worn U-bolts often show stretched threads, flattened bends or pitting at the leg ends, and these signs point to replacement rather than reuse. Measure the bolt diameter across the round stock, the length of each leg and the spacing between the legs, and compare those with the new kit. A bolt that is only slightly off can still clamp poorly, so matching size closely is important on any axle.
Round U-bolts seat on the spring pad and plate, so check those parts for wear and cracks as well. Rust in the threads can make nuts hard to turn, and replacing them along with the bolts keeps the clamp even. Tighten nuts evenly in stages and recheck after the first few drives. Exposed bolts on vehicles that see mud, water or road salt tend to need inspection more often.
