Description

Overview

The Poison Spyder Customs Steering Box Skid Plate, part number 14-15-010, is a satin black steel skid that shields the steering box, one of a Jeep’s most vulnerable components.

The skid is CNC laser cut from 3/16 inch high pressure steel plate, then precision brake formed and professionally MIG welded. It is designed to withstand impacts, which matters on rocky trails where a steering box is exposed.

Key features

  • CNC laser cut from 3/16 inch high pressure steel plate
  • Precision brake formed and professionally MIG welded
  • Satin black powder coat for appearance and corrosion resistance
  • Kit includes additional mounting hardware
  • Installs without cutting or drilling

Skid plates and steering components

The steering box sits low and exposed on many Jeeps, and it connects directly to the steering linkage that keeps the front wheels pointed where you aim them. A skid plate spreads the force of a rock strike across a wider area and keeps the box housing from being pushed into its mounts or cracked when the vehicle drags over obstacles.

Skid plates work best when they clear the moving parts they protect. Check the steering box clearance through full steering lock and at full suspension travel, and make sure the skid does not rub the drag link or tie rod ends. Corrosion often starts where the coating is chipped, so inspect the plate after each trail season.

Steering components are often checked together. Look at the tie rod ends, drag link and pitman arm for play, and tighten the mounting hardware after the first few runs.

  • Check clearance at full steering lock
  • Look for chips in the powder coat
  • Inspect tie rod ends and drag link

Questions & Answers

Is this a direct-fit steering box skid?

It is a direct fit skid. Installation requires no cutting or drilling. Some of the factory hardware is reused during installation. Confirm your Jeep's year and model before ordering.

Is cutting or drilling needed to install it?

No. It installs without cutting or drilling. The kit's additional mounting hardware is used along with some of the factory hardware.

What material is the steering box skid made from?

It is made from 3/16 inch high pressure steel plate. The plate is CNC laser cut, brake formed and MIG welded, then finished in satin black powder coat.

How do I know when a steering box skid needs attention?

Look for dents, cracked welds or a coating that has chipped through to bare steel. A skid that rubs the steering box or pulls on the mounts should be checked before the next trail run. Touch up chips to slow corrosion.
