Before you replace the hose
A power steering pressure hose carries fluid under high pressure from the pump to the steering gear, so its condition affects steering response every time you turn the wheel. Over years of heat cycles and engine vibration, the rubber can soften, swell or crack, and the crimped ends can start to seep. Look for wet spots near the pump outlet, the gear box connection and along the hose body, and check for fluid under the vehicle after the engine has been running.
When the hose is replaced, the fluid system is opened, so keep the workspace clean and keep the new fittings free of debris. Inspect the pump outlet, the gear box fitting and any clamps or brackets at the same time, since those parts age alongside the hose. After installation, top off the reservoir, start the engine, turn the wheel lock to lock and check every connection for leaks before driving.
