Preparing a JK tailgate
A tailgate plate sits on the outside of the JK tailgate, so it is the first part to take impacts from the rear and from brush. Before cutting anything, confirm the tailgate’s interior and wiring routing, and check where the logo skin will sit relative to the latch and the rear lights. Measure twice and mark the cut lines before drilling, because a mistake on a tailgate is hard to undo.
Bare steel will rust quickly if left unprotected, so prime, paint or powder coat the plate before final fitting and seal any cut edges. Stainless hardware keeps the fasteners from corroding, but the plate itself still needs a finish. After installation, check the plate for rattles and recheck the fasteners after the first few drives. If you add a logo skin later, confirm it sits flat against the plate before fastening.
