Upper isolator wear and replacement
The upper isolator takes the top load of the coil spring where it meets the body mount. Over time the pad can flatten, harden or crack, which allows the spring to shift and rattle. On a Grand Cherokee or Commander, that movement often shows up as noise over bumps or a front end that feels loose on uneven pavement.
Replacing the isolator usually means lowering the spring or working with the strut assembly, so plan the job with a helper and proper support. Clean the spring seat and check it for rust before the new pad goes in. Because the front corners work as a pair, inspect both sides and replace them together when one shows wear. Keep the isolator’s orientation consistent with the old part, and tighten the mounting hardware to the factory value in a service manual.
