Keeping shoes seated
A hold down kit keeps the brake shoes pressed against the backing plate so they do not rattle or shift as the drum turns. Springs and pins that have lost their tension let the shoe move, which can change where the lining contacts the drum and cause uneven wear over time.
When the brakes are rebuilt, clean the backing plate and the pin bores, then fit the hardware in a matched set. Check that the shoes slide freely once the hardware is in place, and confirm the adjuster moves without binding. Inspect the hardware again after the first few drives, since new parts can settle.
