Spark wire wear signs
Spark plug wires wear out gradually. Cracked or hardened insulation can leak spark to nearby metal, which shows up as misfires, rough running, or hard starting, especially in damp weather. Carbon tracking along the insulation is another sign that a wire is failing.
Replace wires in a full set when one shows wear, since the others are usually close to the same age. Inspect the boots at both ends, clean the wells, and apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the boots only if your engine calls for it.
