Routing and heat protection
Spark plug wires carry high voltage from the coil to each plug, so their insulation sees heat, vibration and moisture every time the engine runs. Route them so they stay clear of exhaust manifolds and headers, and avoid letting them rub across sharp edges or moving brackets. Use the factory clips or loom on the engine to keep them in position.
RFI suppression reduces electrical noise that can interfere with radios and onboard electronics. Keep the suppression element intact and make sure each boot seats fully on the plug and coil. A loose boot can cause misfires that look like a weak coil.
Inspect wires when you change spark plugs. Look for cracked insulation, brittle boots, burn marks and corroded terminals. Replacing worn wires together with new plugs gives a clean start and makes it easier to find the cause of any later misfire.
