Preparing for a recovery
A good recovery starts before the rope comes off the drum. Pick a solid anchor point, such as a tree or a second vehicle with its own winch, and keep the rope path clear of rocks and brush. Set the winch to pull in a straight line where possible, because a steep angle loads the fairlead and mount harder than the pull itself.
Once the winch is working, keep people out of the rope’s path and watch the drum as it spools. Stop if the rope is building unevenly or the motor sounds strained. Clean and inspect the rope afterward, and check the fairlead and mounting bolts before the next trip.
