Overview
The Smittybilt 97710S is a 94 ft. gray synthetic replacement winch rope in the Spectra 10K series. Smittybilt says its universal synthetic ropes are made from 100% Spectra engineered fiber and tested for toughness on the trail.
Winch rope is a wearing item, and Smittybilt says kinks, fraying and other visible wear are signs that the rope needs replacing. The line is also offered in other capacities, with ratings of 8,000 lb, 10,000 lb, 12,000 lb and 15,000 lb. Pick the rating that matches your winch’s line pull rather than the length alone.
Key features
- 100% Spectra engineered fiber
- Built for trail recovery use
- 94 ft. length in gray
- Available in 8,000 lb to 15,000 lb ratings
Replacing worn winch rope
Winch rope wears from use, and the most common causes are abrasion over rocks, heat from a clutch or brake drag, and kinks from loose spooling. Replace the rope when the surface shows fuzzing, flattened sections or cuts, or when the core begins to show. A worn rope can fail suddenly under load, so do not wait for a visible break.
Choosing a replacement starts with the rating. The rope’s rating has to match the winch’s line pull, and its length has to fit the drum with enough wraps left on it. Check the drum size and the fairlead type before ordering, since synthetic rope needs a smooth hawse or roller that will not cut the fibers.
After installing new rope, spool it under light tension and run the winch slowly through the first few pulls. Recheck the rope end attachment after the first use, and keep a spare shackle and a tree saver in the recovery kit.
- Fuzzing, flattened spots or cuts mean replace
- Match the rope rating to the winch line pull
- Check the fairlead type before installing

Vehicle fitment
This rope is recovery gear and is not vehicle-specific. Smittybilt sells it as universal fit, so match the rope’s rating and length to your winch before installing it.
Installation notes
Match the rope’s rating to your winch before installing, because the rope must be rated for the winch’s line pull. Inspect the rope for kinks, fraying and wear before each use.
What’s included
The replacement rope is the only item listed. Hooks, shackles and other attachments aren’t included with it.
