Shoe wear and drum condition
Brake shoes wear at the lining and at the contact points on the backing plate, and uneven wear often points to a sticking wheel cylinder or a seized adjuster. Check lining thickness on both shoes and look for glazing, which reduces grip. New shoes should sit squarely on the anchor and the cylinder pistons without binding.
Drums that are scored or out of round will wear new linings quickly, so measure the drum diameter and inspect the surface before fitting new shoes. Replace the hold-down springs and check the adjuster during the same job. Clean the backing plate of dust and apply grease only to contact points, never to the lining. Test the pedal and adjust the shoes before driving. Bed in the new linings with gentle stops.
