Description

Overview

The Edge EAS daily driver and tow kit with EGT starter cable, part number 98609, adds exhaust gas temperature monitoring to Edge CS/CS2 and CTS/CTS2 units. EGT, or exhaust gas temperature, is measured by a probe that helps show whether added power is creating excessive heat that could damage the engine.

The kit suits daily diesel driving and towing. Towing can put a lot of strain on a truck and make it run hot, so the kit gives drivers a way to watch exhaust temperatures before an overheated truck is left at the roadside. The Edge Accessory System (EAS) is an expandable platform, and a user can connect multiple EGT sensors to compare readings in different locations.

The kit works only with the CS/CS2 and CTS/CTS2 product lines. Because the EAS lets several accessories daisy-chain to one of those units, the same device can display dozens of parameters.

Key features

  • EGT probe monitors exhaust gas temperature
  • Suited to daily diesel driving and towing
  • Edge Accessory System (EAS) supports daisy-chained accessories
  • Multiple EGT sensors can compare readings at different locations
  • Works with CS/CS2 and CTS/CTS2 product lines
  • Part number 98609 and UPC 810115011446

Reading exhaust temperature

Exhaust gas temperature is most useful as a trend. A reading that climbs steadily under load, or that stays high after the truck has been run hard, is a reason to back off the throttle and let the engine cool. Towing uphill or at highway speed places more demand on the engine, so checking temperatures during long grades shows when the load is becoming too much for the setup.

The probe position matters. Placing it too close to the turbo or a manifold outlet can show readings that differ from the cylinder head, so compare results from the same location each time. When several sensors are connected, comparing them can reveal uneven fueling or a restricted exhaust path. Keep probe wiring clear of hot surfaces and secure it so it does not chafe during travel.

  • Log readings on long tows for comparison
  • Recheck the probe connection after the first drive

Questions & Answers

Does the Edge EAS 98609 kit work with any Edge gauge?

No. The EAS daily driver and tow kit works only with the CS/CS2 and CTS/CTS2 product lines. Check your Edge unit model before fitting the kit.

What is an EGT probe used for?

An EGT probe measures exhaust gas temperature. It helps show whether added power is creating excessive heat that could damage the engine. The kit is also suited to towing.

Can more than one EGT sensor be connected?

Yes. The EAS lets a user connect multiple EGT sensors to monitor temperatures in different locations and compare readings. Accessories can also be daisy-chained to the same unit.

Does the EGT kit need to run all the time?

The kit is most helpful while towing or driving under heavy load, when exhaust heat rises. It can stay connected for daily driving, and readings can be reviewed whenever you want to see how the engine is handling the work.
