Checking the disconnect link
The shift fork clip is a small retainer in the disconnect actuator linkage. Its role is to hold the parts in position so the actuator fork moves the sleeve cleanly when the disconnect is engaged or released. Clips like this are usually inexpensive, but a bent or fatigued one can let the fork drift, which may cause the system to fail to lock or to disengage partially.
Before fitting a new clip, remove the old one carefully and note how it sat in the groove. Clean the fork and mounting area of dirt and old grease, and look for wear on the fork face. Clips often get replaced when the actuator is serviced, so it is sensible to inspect the actuator, its seals and the linkage at the same time. Make sure the clip seats fully so it does not rattle or back out under load.
