Output shaft seal function
The output shaft seal works at the point where the shaft passes through the transfer case housing, and its lip rides on the shaft surface to hold lubricant inside. Any roughness, groove or corrosion on that surface can wear the lip and let fluid escape, even when the new seal is correct. Inspect the shaft before fitting the seal to protect its service life.
Seal size and lip design must match the case bore and the shaft diameter, so confirm the match against your transfer case before installation. When the seal is replaced, the output yoke or flange is often removed as well, and its nut should be re-torqued to the specified value for your vehicle. Check the fluid level after reassembly and look for seepage on the first few drives.
