Re-keying and lock service
An ignition cylinder is the part of the lock that accepts the key and turns the switch. On a YJ, it wears from repeated use, from keys that are worn or bent, and from grit that gets into the tumblers. Trouble often shows as a key that is hard to turn, a cylinder that sticks in the off position or a key that comes out at an odd angle.
When a new cylinder is installed, have the keys cut before reassembling the column so the new key can be tested in each position. Keep the old key with the spare parts until the new one works smoothly. A locksmith can cut keys from the cylinder’s code, which avoids guesswork.
Store spare keys in a dry place and avoid carrying them with heavy keyrings, which put strain on the cylinder. Lubricate the lock sparingly with a dry graphite product, not oil, since oil collects dust and gums the tumblers over time.
