Overview
It is a heater control valve for the 1987-1990 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) and the 1987-1990 Jeep Comanche, made for 4.0L 6 cylinder engines.
A heater control valve regulates how coolant flows to the heater core, which lets the driver adjust cabin heat. Crown Automotive describes its catalog as over 8,000 different part numbers, including factory-discontinued items.
Key features
- Heater control valve for listed XJ and Comanche trims
- Made for 4.0L 6 cylinder engines
- Direct-fit listing per Crown Automotive
- Discontinued-item coverage noted by the brand
Heater valve service tips
A heater control valve sits in the coolant circuit and opens or closes flow to the heater core, so it affects how warm the cabin gets and how quickly it heats up. A valve that sticks partly open can leave the heater lukewarm, while one that fails closed may stop heat entirely. Symptoms often show up as uneven cabin temperature or a heater that works only on some settings.
Work on the valve only after the engine cools, and drain enough coolant to get below the valve. Inspect the hoses and clamps connected to it for hardening or seepage, since replacing them while the circuit is open saves a second job. After installation, refill the system, bleed trapped air, and check each connection for leaks before driving.
- Check cabin heat on each fan speed
- Inspect hoses for cracks and softness
- Bleed air from the heater circuit after refilling
