Inspecting the adjuster path
The adjuster cable in a drum brake pulls the self-adjuster wheel as the shoes wear, which keeps the shoes close to the drum. A cable guide keeps that cable routed along its intended path, so it does not rub the backing plate, catch on a spring or bind against the drum. When the guide wears, grooves, cracks or flattened edges can let the cable drag or slip, and the adjuster may then fail to take up wear evenly.
When you change a guide, inspect the adjuster cable as well. Look for fraying, kinks or rust where it passes the guide, and move the cable freely by hand before reassembly. Lubricate the pivot points lightly with a brake-safe grease and avoid getting any on the shoes or drum surface. After installation, make several reverse-and-forward adjustments and test the parking brake travel before driving.
