Checking the seal and slinger
An inner shaft slinger throws oil away from the seal as the shaft turns, so it helps keep gear oil from reaching the lip of the seal. When the slinger is bent, grooved or missing, oil can travel along the shaft and leak past the seal, leaving a film on the inside of the brake backing plate or the axle housing. Looking at the seal lip and the slinger’s edges during a teardown shows whether the part has been doing its job.
Because the slinger sits close to the seal, it is usually sensible to replace the seal at the same time when the axle is apart. Keep the gear oil level in the correct range and check for seepage after a few drives. Clean the shaft surface so the slinger seats squarely before reassembly.
