Rebuilding a rear caliper
A rear caliper rebuild renews the piston, seal and boot, which are the parts that wear and let moisture in. The seal controls the piston’s return and the boot keeps dirt off the piston surface. Rebuilding is a practical option when the caliper still moves freely but the seals have started to leak.
Before rebuilding, inspect the caliper bore for scoring and check the bleeder and brake hose. A pitted or scored bore should not be reused, since a new piston will not seal properly against it. Use fresh brake fluid during bleeding, and check the parking brake mechanism if the vehicle has one.
