Choosing a kayak carrier
A rear loading carrier lifts the kayak onto the back of the vehicle, so the load sits behind the rear axle and near the tailgate or rear bar. Before choosing a carrier, measure your kayak’s length and width, check its weight, and confirm the carrier can take that weight with your roof bars or mounting points. Boat weight and bow position change how the load feels on the road.
Carriers are often fitted with tie-downs, so inspect straps, buckles and cradles before each trip and replace any that are worn or fraying. Check the mounting bolts after the first drive, and recheck tension after loading the kayak. Keep the number of kayaks you carry in line with what the carrier is designed to hold.
