Driveline wear and checks
The rear drive shaft transfers power from the transmission or transfer case to the rear axle, so it works through changing angles as the suspension moves. A non-CV joint handles that movement well at moderate angles, but worn joints develop play that shows up as vibration or a clunk when the drivetrain shifts between drive and reverse. Regular inspection helps catch these problems before they affect the axle or the transmission.
Check the slip yoke for smooth movement and look for grease leaking from the universal joint caps. Keep an eye on balance and the condition of the shaft itself, since dents or missing weights can cause vibration at speed. If you lift the vehicle, check driveline angles afterward, because changed angles put extra stress on the joints.
