How hood prop rods work
A hood prop rod is a rigid rod that holds the hood open while you work in the engine bay. It locates in a bracket on the underside of the hood and a fixed point on the body, usually with a clip or ball end at each side. Because the hood is heavy, a worn rod can slip and let the hood close on you, so checking it before each service matters.
Over time the rod tip, clip and bracket wear, and surface rust can build up on the rod shaft. Look for bends, cracks or loose clips, and lubricate pivot points lightly. If the hood sags or will not stay up, inspect the hood hinge bushings and the rod ends together, since both can cause the same symptom.
