Overview

Bare steel care
A bare steel bumper is unpainted, so the first job after installation is protecting the metal. Sand any mill scale or weld spatter, then apply a primer and topcoat or a protective coating to the bumper body and any exposed welds. Rust tends to start at seams, bolt holes and where stone chips have cut through the finish, so look at those areas after wet weather and trail use.
When a winch is mounted, the bumper and its mounting points carry the load during recovery. Inspect the winch bolts and D-ring hardware before each trip and tighten them if they have loosened. Keep the winch rope in good shape, and use a snatch block or recovery strap when the angle of pull is wrong. Check hood and grille clearance once the winch is in place, since the body can move when the truck is loaded.
