Overview

Working with a mount set
A transmission mount set usually includes more than one cushion or bracket, and each piece has a specific position on the frame or crossmember. Mixing up positions can misalign the transmission and put stress on the shifter, driveshaft and exhaust. Before removing anything, mark the orientation of each original mount and note how the brackets sit. Polyurethane components are firmer than factory rubber, so exact placement matters more when the replacement is installed.
Older Dodge D-series and W-series trucks often have rusted frame brackets, and those should be inspected before the new mounts go in. Look for cracks, elongated holes and loose rivets or welds. Support the transmission while swapping the mounts so the weight does not hang on a single point. After the first drives, check every fastener again, since new mounts can settle and loosen. Keep the set together in a bag until installation so no pieces go missing.
