Pinion seal and slinger service
The pinion seal sits at the front of the differential where the driveshaft yoke turns the pinion. The inner slinger sits just inside it, catching oil that works past the bearings and throwing it away from the seal lip. A worn or missing slinger lets more oil reach the seal, which can speed up leakage around the yoke.
When rebuilding, the slinger is usually replaced along with the pinion seal because both are removed during the same work. Clean the pinion shaft, check it for grooves or rust, and make sure the new slinger is seated flat before the yoke goes back on. Recheck the fluid level once the vehicle has been driven a short distance.
