Why clips get replaced
Support clips on early CJ front brakes are small, inexpensive and easy to lose during a pad change. They hold the caliper where it belongs, so a missing or bent clip can let the caliper rattle or shift under braking. Clips are often bent when the caliper is removed, so check the shape of the old one against the new one before fitting.
A worn clip may look fine at a glance, but its contact faces can wear enough to let the caliper move a little. Clean the mounting area thoroughly, apply only the lubricant the service procedure calls for, and make sure the clip seats fully. Replace it with the pads, since both wear together, and recheck fit after the first short drive.
