Keeping the blade in good shape
Blade rubber on a direct replacement wears from sun, heat and the grit that collects on the windshield. Cleaning the glass and the blade edge with mild soap and water once in a while removes the film that causes streaks, and it helps the rubber keep a sharp edge. A blade with a torn or hardened edge should be replaced rather than reused.
Blades for TJ and YJ Wranglers often sit beside a soft top or hard top, so the arm should be checked for proper height and pressure before fitting. Old arms with bent or stiff pivots can leave a blade skipping even when the new rubber is sound. Look at the pivot and linkage for wear as part of the same job.
- Clean the glass and blade edge regularly
- Replace a torn or hardened edge
- Check arm height and pressure
- Inspect pivots and linkage at the same time
