Description

Overview

The Energy Suspension Hyper-Flex System 2.18104G is a black polyurethane bushing kit for the 1959–1975 Jeep CJ5 and the 1955–1958 Willys CJ-5. It includes front and rear spring and shackle bushings, body mounts and tie rod end boots.

Energy Suspension says its Hyper-Flex line uses performance polyurethane bushings and bump stops for control arms, traction bars and leaf springs, and states they last longer than original rubber. The kit concentrates on the spring, shackle, body mount and boot positions.

Key features

  • Black polyurethane bushings
  • Front and rear spring and shackle bushings
  • Body mounts included
  • Tie rod end boots included

Before you press bushings

Spring and shackle bushings control how the leaf springs move in their mounts. When they wear, the most common symptoms are clunking over bumps, loose steering feel and a rattle from the rear shackles. Replacing them usually means the springs or shackles come apart, which is a good time to inspect the spring hangers and frame mounts for cracks, rust and elongated holes. Polyurethane transmits more road vibration than rubber, so expect a firmer ride and a little more drivetrain noise on rough trails. Press the bushings in with a press or vise so they seat square.

Body mounts and tie rod end boots are small parts that are often overlooked. A split tie rod boot lets grit into the joint, so replacing it while the steering is apart makes sense. Work on one side at a time so the other side stays available as a reference for how parts sit.

  • Inspect spring hangers for cracks before pressing new bushings
  • Replace split tie rod end boots during the same job
  • Grease bushings only as far as the installation steps direct

Questions & Answers

Does the 2.18104G fit a Jeep CJ5?

Yes, for the 1959–1975 Jeep CJ5 in Base and Renegade trims, and for the 1955–1958 Willys CJ-5. Confirm your year, model and trim before ordering.

What is included in the Hyper-Flex kit?

Front and rear spring and shackle bushings, body mounts and tie rod end boots are included. Control arm bushings are not part of this kit.

What color is the 2.18104G?

It is black, made of polyurethane. Energy Suspension says its Hyper-Flex polyurethane parts last longer than original rubber stops and bushings.

What is the part number?

The part number is 2.18104G, and the UPC is 703639259688. It is the black version of the Energy Suspension Hyper-Flex kit.

How can I tell whether the spring bushings need replacing?

Look for clunking over bumps, wandering on the highway, and visible cracking or flattened material in the old bushings. Polyurethane wears more slowly than rubber, but a bushing with noticeable play should still be checked and replaced when worn.

Should the control arm bushings be replaced at the same time?

Control arm bushings are not part of this kit, so they are a separate purchase. If the old ones are cracked or loose, replacing them during the same job avoids taking the suspension apart twice.
