Description

Overview

The EBC Brakes UD712 is a set of front Ultimax OEM replacement brake pads for the 1997-2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), 1997-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ), 2004-2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (LJ) and 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler (TJ).

The Ultimax compound is a long-lasting, minimal-dust pad for urban and daily driving in a car, light truck or SUV. It contains a small percentage of steel fiber, far less than some competing pads use.

Ultimax is designed to work across a universal heat range and to reduce disc wear compared with more abrasive semi-metallic pads. The compound has remained unchanged for years and suits everyday driving.

EBC is explicit that the lower rotor wear does not mean the pads themselves wear quickly, and it points out that Ultimax delivers its results once the pad has been bedded in.

Key features

  • Minimal-dust OEM replacement compound for urban and daily driving
  • Small percentage of steel fiber in the blend
  • Low rotor wear: EBC says disc wear drops by up to 50% against more abrasive semi-metallics
  • EBC says one rotor can last two sets of pads
  • Universal heat range
  • Direct fit for the stock caliper, front position

Choosing the right pads

A front pad for a Jeep Wrangler or Cherokee is chosen based on how the vehicle is used. For daily driving on paved roads, a low-dust pad keeps the wheels cleaner, and a steady friction level suits most drivers. If you drive off road or tow, consider how much heat the pads and rotors will see on long descents and inspect them more often.

Front brakes do most of the work, so check the pads at each tire rotation. Install new pads with the caliper hardware clean and the slide pins lubricated as the vehicle requires. Plan a gentle bed-in before any longer trip. A rotor still within its wear limit can often be kept, but check for scoring, cracks and a lip at the edge.

Installation notes

A proper bed-in matters for Ultimax pads. Rotors do not always need replacing at each pad change, so inspect them first.

Questions & Answers

Which Jeeps use the EBC UD712 brake pads?

The UD712 fits 1997-2006 Wrangler TJ, 2004-2006 Wrangler Unlimited LJ, 1997-2001 Cherokee XJ and 1997-1998 Grand Cherokee ZJ. It is a front pad, so the rear axle needs its own pad set.

How long do Ultimax pads and rotors last?

EBC says disc wear is reduced by up to 50% compared with more abrasive semi-metallics, and that one rotor can commonly last two sets of Ultimax pads. EBC adds that this does not mean the pads wear quickly.

Where is the Ultimax pad made?

The Ultimax pad is made at the EBC Bristol brake plant in the UK. The compound has remained unchanged for years and is a widely sold replacement pad.

Do the front pads need to be replaced in pairs?

Yes. Both front pads on each caliper should be replaced together, and the pads on both sides of the axle should match in compound. Replacing only one side can leave uneven braking and may cause a pull under heavy stops. Check fit against your year, model and trim.
