Choosing a replacement side marker base
Side marker lamps sit low on the body and face road debris, car washes and sun, so the base they mount to can crack, warp or lose its seal over time. A cracked base lets water reach the lamp socket and can corrode the wiring. A plastic base is light and does not rust, but it can become brittle with age, especially where the lamp has been overtightened.
Before fitting a new base, clean the mounting area and inspect the wiring connector for corrosion. Check that the socket seats fully and that the lamp goes in without forcing it. Many owners replace the lens, gasket and bulb at the same time, since these parts age together and a fresh seal keeps moisture out of the lamp.
