Weatherstrip care on older Jeeps
A full door weatherstrip seals the door opening against water, wind and road noise. On older Jeeps the rubber hardens with heat and sun, shrinks and cracks, which lets water in along the lower edge and at the corners. Regular cleaning with mild soap and water, followed by a silicone rubber conditioner, keeps the material supple and slows cracking.
Before replacing a strip, check the door fit. A door that sits low or out of line can compress one part of the seal and leave gaps elsewhere. Look at the retainer channel and the door frame for old adhesive or grit, which can stop a new strip from seating evenly. Careful, patient installation along the whole length gives a more even seal than a rushed one.
