Overview
The Crown Automotive 5252984 is a passenger side front brake caliper for the Jeep Cherokee XJ, Grand Cherokee ZJ and Wrangler YJ, TJ and LJ.
Front calipers do most of the stopping. This is the right-hand unit for several Jeep models that share a front brake design, and it mounts at the front right position as a direct fit.
The left-hand caliper is 5252985, so a full axle needs one of each. Crown Automotive makes Jeep replacement parts, with over 8,000 part numbers including discontinued factory items.
Front calipers carry most of the braking load, so a passenger side caliper that sticks or leaks is worth fixing promptly. The 5252984 is the right-hand unit and is shared by several Jeep families through the 1990s and into the 2000s. Replacing one side is common, but the driver side caliper, 5252985, is a separate order if both sides are being done. Pads and rotors are not included.

- Replacement part made for Jeep vehicles
Choosing a caliper for an axle
A caliper clamps the pads onto the rotor, so its piston seals and bore need to stay clean and free to move. On older Jeeps a seized slide pin or a torn boot is a common reason one side brakes harder than the other, which pulls the vehicle sideways under braking. When one caliper is replaced, the opposite side should be inspected at the same time, because it has seen the same years of heat and moisture.
Matching pads and rotors matters as much as the caliper itself. Pads should be the same compound on both sides, and a rotor with heavy scoring or uneven wear will chew through new pads quickly. Brake hose condition deserves a look too, since a collapsed hose can keep a fresh caliper from releasing fully. Bleed the system after any hydraulic work and test the pedal before driving.
- Check the slide pins for free movement
- Inspect the brake hose for cracks or swelling
- Compare rotor thickness on both sides
- Bleed the front brakes after the caliper is fitted

Vehicle fitment
Crown Automotive names the 1990–2001 Cherokee (XJ), the 1993–1998 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) and three Wrangler generations: 1990–1995 (YJ), 1997–2006 (TJ) and 2004–2006 (LJ).
The 1987–1989 Wrangler YJ, the 1984–1989 Cherokee and the 1999–2004 Grand Cherokee are outside the list. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.
Installation notes
Replacing the caliper breaks into the brake fluid circuit. Bleed the front brakes and check pedal feel before the Jeep goes back on the road.
