Sewn construction and durability
Seams take the most stress on a spare tire cover. As the cover is pulled on and off, the stitching around the elastic channel flexes each time, so seams are the first place to inspect. Fabric covers also soak up water and grit, which can add weight to the cover and speed wear where it rubs against the tire tread.
Before storing a spare under a vehicle, look at the tire itself. Check tread depth, sidewall cracking and air pressure, since the cover only protects the rubber and does not repair it. A cover that fits snugly while the spare is inflated to the correct pressure stays in place better than one fitted to a soft tire.
- Look at seams after each cleaning
- Dry the fabric before storing the spare
- Check the spare’s pressure at regular intervals
- Replace worn elastic before it lets the cover slip
