Halogen bulbs and heat
Halogen bulbs run hot, so the housing needs air to move around them. Heat trapped behind a sealed lens can shorten bulb life, and it can also fog the inside of the lamp. Avoid touching the glass with bare fingers, since skin oils leave residue that burns onto the surface and creates hot spots.
Carry a spare bulb of the same type in the vehicle, especially if you drive trails where recovery is slow. When a bulb is changed, check the connector seal and the rubber boot for cracks. Moisture that gets past a worn seal leads to corrosion on the terminals, which is a common cause of intermittent fog light operation.
