Checking the studs before install
Lug nuts only clamp as well as the studs underneath them. Before installing a new kit, look at each stud for rust, crushed threads or flattened crests, and run a clean nut down the full length by hand. A nut that binds partway is a sign of damage or debris, and it should not be forced. Clean threads help the nut reach the proper clamp load.
A thread chaser can clean light rust or debris from stud threads without changing their size. Use it carefully and remove loose material before fitting the wheel. Replace any stud that is bent, cracked or stripped, since a damaged stud cannot hold torque reliably. Keep the wheel seat clean as well, so the nuts sit flat.
