Headlamp bulb retention
The bulb retainer is the small clip or ring that holds a headlamp bulb in its socket. If it is cracked or loose, the bulb can wiggle, causing the beam to shift or the bulb to overheat at its base. Retainers on older Jeeps can become brittle from heat cycles, so look for cracks, stretched clips, or discolored plastic around the socket when diagnosing a loose bulb.
When replacing one, remove the headlamp bulb carefully and note its position. Seat the new retainer so the bulb locks firmly without forcing it. Check that the socket and retainer fit squarely behind the lens, then test the low and high beams before reassembling the grille or trim. Keep the bulb and socket free of grease, since oils can shorten bulb life.
