Pre-installation checks
Spline lug nuts rely on a matched seat in the wheel, so the shape of the nut face and the taper of the bore both matter. Install the nuts by hand first to confirm they thread smoothly, then tighten them in a crisscross order. Hand-starting prevents cross-threading, which is a common cause of damaged studs and stripped nuts. Keep the lug socket in the vehicle so a damaged nut can be swapped out on the trail.
After fitting, inspect the wheel seats for debris, rust, or paint buildup, since any of these can change the clamping force. Chrome finishes are easily scratched by sockets and rattle guns, so use a socket designed for chrome nuts where possible. Re-check torque after the first few drives and periodically during seasonal tire rotations.
