Before you start
A full steel door paddle handle works as the outside pull, passing motion through a rod to the latch. Most failures come from the pivot wearing or the return spring weakening, which leaves the paddle sloppy or slow to snap back. Before taking anything apart, note how the rod clips onto the paddle so the new one lines up the same way.
Black paint is a coating, so chips show up where stones or brush scrape the surface. Touch up small chips with a matching paint pen to slow surface rust on the steel beneath. Keep the square rubber seal in good shape too, since a split seal lets water and mud reach the latch area.
Compare the new handle to the old one before you start the install. Check the mounting holes, the rod end and the seal position, then test the latch from inside and outside before closing the door panel.
